Lee Wedlake’s Karate Newsletter

August 2016

From “Mr. Lee”,

You didn’t get recent newsletters because I did not write June or July issues. I had gotten little to no feedback on whether people found them useful, enjoyable, irritating, etc. As an experiment I wanted to see if anyone asked about them. Two of you, out of several hundred subscribers contacted me and asked. Rather than spend a lot of time on these I can use the time on my monthly technical articles for what my webmaster calls “Premium Subscribers”. I’m planning a series on the Family Groupings. I’ll continue to send these out from time to time when I gather enough information I think is worth your time.

Technicalities

Knife attacks
This was sent by Michael Wallace in South Carolina. It’s of an Australian instructor making a point about something we call a “jailhouse rush” knife attack. Strong language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E61jnJe_1SI&feature=em-share_video_user

Gun Defenses
When I teach the gun defense I talk about what to do when the police show up. This article is in line with what I recommend. It was sent in by Steve White in New Hampshire. http://concealednation.org/2016/07/what-should-you-do-after-you-use-your-gun-in-defense/

The following is from Tim Walker, one of my 4ths and an NRA handgun instructor in Florida.

Physically scan your surroundings*. Don’t just look out through your periphery, physically move your head and body to scan your area. Do not assume your assailant acted alone. Do not assume that just because he’s down, he’s out.

Lee,

Years ago I worked with a man who had been an assistant manager for Winn Dixie while at the same time he had a security guard job he worked when was not working at Winn Dixie.

While working at Winn Dixie a cashier was robbed. Gordon was a big man and notified of the robbery in progress he rushed to the front of the store as the robber was leaving. Gordon chased the bad guy out. The front of the store had those decorate big concrete planters and a guy was sitting on the planters edge which was common for people to do on a daily basis.

The robber ran down the sidewalk with Gordon running after him and when Gordon ran by the guy on the planter this guy jumped up and hit Gordon in the head with a metal pipe club. Both bad guys got away and Gordon needed stitches but survived.

This is a real life example of “Do not assume your assailant acted alone”, or in this case “criminal” acted alone.

*This is what we call in Kenpo, a cover-out. Steve White took me along to a course at the Sig Academy where they teach the scan to cancel out the tendency to get tunnel vision under stress. LW

From Bill Grizzle in Chicago – It does not hurt to request medical help, it goes to show that you did not want to hurt the scum bag.

You could possibly administer first aid yourself if you know how.

Karate Politics

IKKA News
Kam IV is in the process of having Facebook pages taken down where schools are infringing on the Intellectual Properties owned by Kam IV. Several have been done and more are on the list.
The “other” IKKA lost a court challenge to the ownership question as well.

Left of Bang by Van Horne, Riley and Coyne

The title refers to the use of force progression that can end in BANG! A gunshot, IED, etc. For us as martial artists, it’s useful because it is a study in behavioral clusters that help us detect impending assault.
LTC David Grossman loved the book and that was enough for me. One of the testimonials was from a now-retired police chief I used to shoot with.
In the final chapter the authors list six things experts do. Here they are.
They see patterns others don’t.
They see anomalies – events that did not happen
They see the big picture (have situational awareness)
They create opportunities and improvise
They have the ability to predict the future based on previous experience and see differences too small for novices to detect
They know their limitations.

Fundamentals of Home Defense

I have a friend, a single lady raising a child, who used every one of these principles when a genuine nut-case started beating on her front door at 530 in the morning. He was screaming “I’m going to kill you and your family, too!” She grabbed her Colt .45 and the kid, barricaded in a bedroom and called the cops. Luckily, the police station was two blocks away and they were there quickly. Turned out the man was an escapee from a mental hospital who went to the first house he saw lights on. She had just recently replaced her front door with a better one and that slowed him down enough to keep him out until the cops arrived.

  2. Barricade
  3. Arm
  4. Communicate
  5. Respond

Tai Chi

The Shanghai University of Sport released a report that says traditional Chinese exercises such as tai chi could be helpful to those with cardiovascular diseases. They did a meta study and found blood pressure reductions and drops in harmful cholesterol.
